Lauki or Bottle gourd is also known as calabash gourd, white flowered gourd, New Guinea bean, long melon are the different names for this. Bottle gourd has lots of health benefits, before going to that let me tell you the nutritional value. Bottle gourd is low in calories and provides small amounts of vitamin C, folate, calcium, iron, zinc and B vitamins. It has lots of water content, “no FAT”. Not only does it have a cooling effect in the body, but is quite beneficial for the heart and even helps reduce sleeping disorders. Having Lauki juice daily can help in weight loss. Rich in fiber and alkali content, it helps in treating acidity.
Bottle gourd is used in many types of cooking like it can be sautéed, fried, pickled or grilled. You can use cubed bottle gourd in curries, grated ones to the fritters or payasam(kheer). Bottle gourd skin is used to make chutney preparation, also Lauki is used in soups or stuffed and steamed, popularly used in many parts of the World.

Lauki Kofta Curry | Bottle Gourd Kofta Curry Recipe
Ingredients
For preparing Kofta
- 1/2 Bottle gourd grated
- 1/4 cup Besan (gram flour)
- 1/4 cup Rice flour
- 1 tsp Jeera
- 1 tsp Garam masala
- 1/2 tsp Dry mango powder
- 1 tsp Turmeric powder
- 2 tbsp Coriander leaves
- Salt for the taste
- Oil for deep fry
For preparing Masala paste
- 3 Tomato
- 4 cloves Garlic
- 1 Green chilli
- 1/2 inch Ginger
- Water as required
For preparing Kofta Curry
- 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
- 1/2 tsp Jeera
- 1 Onion
- 5-6 Curry leaves
- 1 tsp Red chilli powder
- Salt for the taste
- 1/2 tsp Sugar optional
- 1 tbsp Coriander leaves
- Water as required
Notes
For Preparing Kofta
- Peel off the bottle gourd skin and grate it. (if the seeds part become hard then remove seeds part).
- If bottle gourd is having too much of water then squeeze well.
- Mix all the ingredients a large bowl for the Kofta with the grated bottle gourd except oil.
- Make small round shape balls or patties. I have prepared patties kind of kofta.
- Heat the oil in frying pan and fry the kofta till they get golden brown colour on both sides.
- Take out the kofta's from oil and put on a tissue. so that it will absorb the extra oil.
For Preparing Masala paste
- Grind all the ingredients listed under Masala paste and add little water for making the paste.
- Make smooth paste.
For Preparing the Kofta Curry
- In a Pan take 1 tbsp of oil and once the oil is heated add mustard seeds, jeera, curry leaves, chopped onion and red chilli powder.
- Once the Onion turns translucent then add the masala paste which you prepared.
- Then add red chilli powder, salt and sugar(optional) and continue to boil until the oil separates from the gravy, saute in between.
- You can add half cup of water if you wish the gravy to be not too thick and serving with rice.(otherwise don't add much water).
- Stir and boil until curry is nicely boils. Garnish with the coriander leaves and switch off the flame.
- Few minutes before serving you can add the Lauki Kofta in the curry.
- Serve with Roti, Chapati, paratha, with plain rice.
HOW TO MAKE LAUKI KOFTA CURRY | BOTTLE GOURD KOFTA CURRY RECIPE WITH PHOTOS.
PREPARING THE KOFTA
- Rinse the bottle gourd and peel off the skin. If the seeds part has become hard then remove the seeds part.
- Grate it and squeeze the grated lauki, keep that juice you can in the gravy instead of adding water.
- Add the ingredients- jeera, dry mango powder, garam masala powder, turmeric powder, chopped coriander leaves and salt.
- Then add Besan and rice flour (instead you can use corn flour also).
- Mix everything well make round shaped balls or the patties.
- Heat the oil in a deep pan and fry until the kofta get nice golden brown colour on both the sides.
- Remove and put on the tissue to absorb the excess oil.
Preparing the Masala paste
- For making the masala paste, take chopped tomato, garlic, green chilli, and ginger.
- You can add little water and make smooth paste of it.

Tips & Variations
- You can also shallow fry kofta’s in a pan.
- If you are deep frying then fry on a medium flame.
- I have added the onion while preparing the gravy not to the masala paste.
- Sugar is optional, if you like then add sugar.
