South Indian Coconut Rice | Tengai sadam recipe with step by step photos and detailed video of the recipe. Coconut rice or Tengai sadam is a simple and quick rice recipe. This rice is also known as Nariyal chawal. This Vegan and gluten free recipe is one of my favorite rice recipe with mild spice and this delicious rice can be prepared very easily within few minutes. Only thing is rice should be cooked before.
Coconut rice was mostly adapted from South India, because coconut grows abundantly, and most of the dishes we prepare are like curries, chutney, sambar, contains coconut, even for the sabzi’s we put coconut. Coconut gives the authentic flavour to the dish, even in this coconut rice also most of the flavour is coming from coconut itself. If you have freshly grated coconut then it’s well and good.
If you are not in a mood to cook something, or whenever you are bored with the same sambar, rice, rasam kind of things, it is one of the rice variety you can prepare in few minutes of time. Coconut rice is prepared during festival time for prasadam, and also it can be packed for lunch box. Further it can also be a good breakfast recipe with left over rice. Usually I don’t prepare rice recipes for breakfast because my husband doesn’t eat rice items in the morning. So I prepare it either for lunch or dinner. Though cholesterol content is high in coconut, be generous in putting coconut to the rice as most of the flavor comes from the coconut itself.
Coming to serving part, its very easy you can serve with some papad or as it is also it tastes great. Some people serve along with vegetable curry. But if you have no time to prepare curry then you can serve along with mango pickle or lemon pickle also.
