Green Peas Sundal | Batani Sundal | Batani Usli Recipe – with step by step photos, description and video of the recipe is here. Green Peas Sundal is a popular dish prepared during nine days of Navaratri or Ganesh Chaturthi Festival. It is also a very nutritious snack you can give for kids. This delicious snack recipe packed with nutrients, vitamins.

Green peas is also known as Pattani in Tamil, Batani in Kannada. Pattani Sundal or Batani Usli gets rich flavour from the curry leaves, freshly grated coconut and green chilli.

Green Peas Sundal | Batani Usli – In this recipe soaked & boiled green peas is tempered with Indian spices, green chilli, red chilli, curry leaves, and at the end freshly grated coconut is added, that gives a wonderful flavour to the dish.

Moreover, these kind of Sundal is prepared as a Prasadam, just like the dried Chickpeas Sundal | Black Chana Sundal . During Navaratri, each day there will be different type of Prasadam should be made. So mostly during these festival times people prepare it for Prasadam or for naivedya. Also this recipe does not contain either onion or garlic.

Green Peas Sundal | Batani Sundal | Batani Usli

Green Peas Sundal is a popular dish prepared during nine days of Navaratri or Ganesh Chaturthi Festival.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Green Peas (dried)
  • 2 cup Water
  • 1 pinch Turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Lemon Juice
  • 2 TBSP Grated Coconut

For Tempering

  • 1 tsp Oil
  • 1/4 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1/4 tsp Cumin
  • 1 Green Chilli
  • 1 Red Chilli
  • 5-6 Curry Leaves

Instructions

  • Soak the Green peas overnight or for minimum of 8 hours. 
  • Drain the water. 
  • Add the soaked green peas in a vessel to pressure cook. 
  • Add 2 cup of water. 
  • Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles. (Don't overcook)
  • Drain the water after cooking. 
  • For tempering, Take 1 tsp of oil and once oil is heated add mustard seeds, cumin, green chilli, red chilli, also curry leaves. 
  • When mustards starts spluttering, Add cooked green peas. 
  • Mix it well. Keep the flame low. 
  • Add pinch of turmeric, that gives a nice colour too.  
  • Also add salt to taste. 
  • Mix well. Cover and cook for 2 minutes on a low flame. 
  • Add some lemon juice. (You can also add finely chopped raw mango as well, instead of lemon juice)
  • Add 2 TBSP of freshly grated coconut. 
  • Mix everything well. And the delicious Green Peas Sundal | Batani Usli is ready.

HOW TO MAKE GREEN PEAS SUNDAL | BATANI USLI RECIPE WITH STEP BY STEP PHOTOS : 

  1. Soak the Green peas overnight or for minimum of 8 hours.
  2. Drain the water.
  3. Add the soaked green peas in a vessel to pressure cook.
  4. Add 2 cup of water.
  5. Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles. (Don’t overcook)
  6. Drain the water after cooking.

  15. Mix everything well. And the delicious Green Peas Sundal | Batani Usli is ready.

TIPS & VARIATIONS:

  1. You can add finely chopped raw mango instead of lemon juice.
  2. Make sure you don’t overcook the soaked green peas. Otherwise it will become mushy.
  3. You can also prepare this recipe by using fresh green peas. If you are using fresh green peas then just steam it for 3-5 minutes with some water. you don’t really have to boil it in pressure cooker for 4 whistles.
  4. In this recipe I haven’t included onions. If you are making it for snacks then you can add finely chopped onions to the tempering and cook the onions.
  5. Finally, add green chillies according to your spice level.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

1. Can I use White peas for preparing Sundal?

Yes. you can use white peas, dried chickpeas(black chana) etc.

2. If I use Fresh Green peas, should I need to pressure cook?

If you are using fresh green peas/ frozen green peas then you just have to steam it for 3-4 minutes. No need to pressure cook.
