Gopalkala Recipe | Janmashtami Recipe | Dahi Poha for Gokulashtami – with step by step photos, description and video of the recipe is here. Gopalkala is a traditional savoury dish made from flattened rice, cucumber, and your choice of fruits like apple, pomegranate etc. This is an authentic recipe for Krishna Janmashtami or Gokulashtami.

What is Gopalkala?

Gopalkala is a traditional Maharashtrian dish made with poha or flattened rice, curd, cucumber, fruits, and spices. It is a Prasadam recipe made during Krishna Janmashtami or Krishna Jayanti. It is also distributed as Prasadam to the devotees during Dahi Handi(breaking the pot filled with curd).

Gopalkala Recipe | Janmashtami Recipe | Dahi Poha for Gokulashtami – It can also be prepared for breakfast or asa snack. One of the healthy recipe as it consists of cucumber, fruits, curd etc. Gopalkala is very similar to Mosaru Avalakki made in Karnataka.

Krishna Janmashtami is the celebration to mark the birth of Lord Krishna. Most of them fast on Janmashtami day and celebrations start from midnight . Lots of sweets and savoury dishes like Murmura Laddu, Coconut Burfi, Murukku/Chakli, Sweet Poha etc.

Gopalkala Recipe | Janmashtami Recipe

Traditional savoury dish made from flattened rice for Krishna Janmashtami or Gokulashtami.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup Poha / flattened rice
  • 1 cup Curd
  • 1/3 cup Cucumber chopped
  • 1 TBSP Soaked Chana Dal
  • 1/2 cup Grated Coconut
  • 1/3 cup Apple chopped
  • 2 TBSP Pomegranate kernels
  • Salt to taste

For Tempering

  • 1/2 tsp Ghee
  • 1/4 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1/4 tsp Cumin
  • 1 Green Chilli
  • 5-6 Curry Leaves
  • 1 tsp Coriander Leaves Chopped

Instructions
 

  • Take one cup Poha/Flattened rice.
  • Wash it well in water.
  • Soak it for 2 minutes. Make sure you use thick poha. Otherwise it becomes mushy.
  • After 2 minutes, drain the water and add the soaked poha in a big bowl. 
  • Add 1 cup Curd to it.
  • Also add 1/3 cup of chopped cucumber, 1 TBSP of soaked Chana dal (soak it for at least 30 minutes).
  • 1/2 cup freshly grated coconut. 
  • Add 1/3 cup of chopped apple & 2 TBSP of pomegranate kernels. 
  • Mix it once. 
  • Add Salt to taste. 
  • For tempering, take 1/2 tsp of ghee. 
  • Once it is heated, Add 1/4 tsp of mustard seeds, 1/4 tsp of cumin. 
  • Mustard starts spluttering, add 1 chopped green chilli. Switch off the flame.
  • Next add 5-6 Curry leaves,  sauté it.
  • Add the tempering to the poha. 
  • Also add 1 tsp of chopped coriander leaves.
  • Mix well gently.
  • Gopalkala is ready.

TIPS & VARIATIONS :

  1. Firstly, you can add the green chillies based on your taste.
  2. Secondly, do not use the sour curd. Use fresh curd.
  3. You can adjust the consistency of Gopalkala by adding more curd.
  4. Finally, you can add your choice of fruits.
