Brahmi Tambli | Ondelaga Tambli Recipe | Thimare Tambuli Recipe – with step by step photos, description and video of the recipe is here. Healthy and tasty Tambli (raita) recipe from the herb ‘Brahmi’ also known as ‘therapeutic herb’. This Ondelaga Tambli is mainly a curd based side dish can be accompanied with white rice.

Firstly, Brahmi is often regarded as a brain booster or memory enhancer. Brahmi Tambli is prepared very easily with minimum ingredients. The fresh Brahmi leaves, curd and freshly grated coconut is used for preparing the raita to serve along with white rice.

There are two ways of preparing Brahmi tambli. One way of doing is make use of the raw leaves grind it along with grated coconut and little of cumin, grind it then add whisked curd and followed by a seasoning with red chilli. 

Another way of preparing is roast the Brahmi leaves in ghee also add little cumin to it. Then the same process follows as the previous one. 

Secondly, Tambli’s are an important part of the meal in the region of malenadu in Karnataka. It balances the body irrespective of the season. But I love to have it during summer season. This simple yet delicious tambli cools our body during summer. I can call it as a ‘Brain Tonic’ Tambli. 🙂

Brahmi Tambli

Ondelaga or Bramhi is readily available in our farms, usually it grows in moist soil. Furthermore, Ayurveda has been known to treat innumerable ailments for centuries and continues to do so by its age old practice of balancing the various systems in our body through herbal treatments. 

It is a unique herb is Brahmi which has often been regarded as a brain booster. And regular consumption of Brahmi helps in strengthening our immune system. 

Moreover, you can use this herb for preparing Chutney, dal, Tambli. I have already posted a recipe of malabar spinach tambli. Same way we can prepare any tambli from the herbs and spices like ginger, cumin, also with some vegetables like mango which is one of my favourite. My son is fond of green tambli’s.

Ingredients
  

  • handful of Brahmi Leaves
  • 3/4 tsp Cumin
  • 1/2 cup Grated coconut
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1 cup Buttermilk
  • 1 tsp Oil
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1 Red Chilli

Instructions
 

  • Wash & clean the brahmi leaves along with the stem. 
  • Coarsely chop them into pieces. 
  • Take the chopped brahmi leaves in a mixi jar.
  • Then add 3/4 tsp of Cumin. 
  • Next add 1/2 cup of grated coconut. 
  • Also add salt to taste. 
  • Add 1/2 cup of water. 
  • Grind into a smooth paste.
  • Once it becomes smooth paste, transfer to the bowl. 
  • Add 1 cup of buttermilk or whisked curd to it. 
  • Adjust the consistency by adding water or buttermilk.
  • For the seasoning, In a tadka pan add 1 tsp of oil. 
  • Once the oil is heated, add 1/2 tsp mustard seeds. 
  • It will starts spluttering, then add red chillies. 
  • Roast them and switch off the flame. 
  • Put the seasoning to the tambli. 
  • Mix well and serve with white rice.

HOW TO MAKE BRAHMI TAMBLI WITH STEP BY STEP PHOTOS:

TIPS & VARIATION:

  1. Brahmi can be used in the raw form or roast in ghee before grinding. 
  2. You can add 4-5 black peppers while roasting the brahmi. 
  3. Don’t roast the leaves for long, then we will end up loosing the goodness of Brahmi. 
  4. Some may prefer adding little jaggery to it. If you like you can add a teaspoon of jaggery.
