What is Hummus?
Hummus is a Middle eastern or Mediterranean dip or spread made from boiled chickpeas or canned chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice and cumin. Homemade hummus is quick and easy to make, super-smooth, creamy, and tastes so fresh and flavourful. There are many flavours depending on the variation in ingredients.
Chickpeas, also known as garbanzo beans, are part of the legume family. While they have become more popular recently, chickpeas have been grown in Middle Eastern countries for thousands of years. Their nutty taste and grainy texture pairs well with several other foods and ingredients.
As a rich source of vitamins, protein, minerals and fiber, chickpeas may offer a variety of health benefits, such as improving digestion, aiding weight management and reducing the risk of several diseases.
Tips to make Best Hummus
- Instead of canned chickpeas, use dried chickpeas. Soak it overnight and then boil it. Although you can’t make it instantly.
- Cook the chickpeas really well, so that you get nice smooth hummus.
- Most importantly, you need to remove the outer cover of the chickpeas.
- Tahini you can prepare at home very easily. Store bought tahini also can be used if you wish. Here is how to make Tahini at home.
- And I recommend using good quality virgin olive oil. As oil influences the taste and flavour.
- Last but not the least, make sure to add chilled water. If you are preparing in food processor then you can use ice cubes as well. Which helps in reducing the heat formation.
Hummus Variations
It’s purely your choice, depending on the flavours you like you can add the herbs or any vegetables(either roasted or boiled). 1 cup of dried chickpeas makes approx. 3 cups of boiled chickpeas, So you can take according to the quantity you want. I have prepared 3 types of hummus in 1 cup of dried chickpeas.

There are many other variations also you can try are roasted tomato, roasted carrot, chocolate hummus, roasted red pepper hummus and the list goes on….depending on the taste you like, you can add the ingredients.
How to serve Hummus?
It’s commonly eaten in the Middle East and the Mediterranean. Usually Hummus is served as a dip along with Feta bread. And also more often it is served as a side to the tortilla chips, nachos/crackers. Also it can be served with Vegetables sticks.
Moreover, Hummus can be used in preparing sandwiches and wraps.
How long does hummus lasts?
Homemade hummus, on the other hand, usually lasts for around 3-4 days in the fridge. It can definitely go bad at some point, so make sure to check for any signs that you shouldn’t consume it anymore.
It depends on what your hummus is made of. Store-bought varieties often contain preservatives, which means that once they’re open you can keep them in the fridge for up to a week.

Best Hummus Recipe | How to make Hummus at Home
Ingredients
- 1 cup Dried Chickpeas (for 3 types of Hummus)
- 3 cup Water for Soaking
- 1/2 tsp Cumin Powder
- Salt to taste
- 3-4 Garlic Cloves
- 2 tsp Lemon Juice
- 2 TBSP Tahini Paste
- 3-4 TBSP Chilled Water or as much as required
- 1 tsp Virgin Olive Oil
- little Coriander Leaves
- Chilli powder to sprinkle on top
Instructions
- Soak 1 cup of dried chickpeas in a 3 cup of water. (1 cup of dried chickpeas makes approx. 3 cups of boiled chickpeas) So you can take according to the quantity you want.
- Soak it overnight or minimum of 7-8 hours.
- After 8 hours, Remove the water.
- Add in a vessel to pressure cook.
- Also add sufficient water to cover all the chickpeas.
- Pressure cook for 5 whistles.
- After the gas releases on its own, Remove the outer cover of the chickpeas.
- Drain the water.
- Take 1 cup of boiled chickpeas in a blender.
- Add 1/2 tsp Cumin powder.
- Add salt to taste.
- 3 – 4 garlic cloves to be added.
- Then add 2 tsp of lemon juice.
- Add 2 TBSP of Tahini paste.
- Add 3 TBSP chilled water. (just to make sure the ingredients doesn't heat up)
- Blend it to smooth paste. If required add little more water.
- Thick paste like this.
- Transfer to the plate. Spread it on the plate.
- Little Olive oil on top.
- Garnish with some coriander leaves.
- You can also sprinkle some chilli powder on top.
- Classic Hummus is ready to serve as a Dip.
