Moringa also called as Nuggekayi in Kannada, Shevga in Marathi, Murungai keerai in Tamil.
As per French naturalist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck described the species in 1785. Moringa derives from a Tamil word, ‘murungai’ meaning “twisted pod”, alluding to the young fruit. The species name is derived from the Latin words oleum “oil” and ferre “to bear”.
Almost all parts of the Moringa tree are edible, with regional uses varying widely. Moringa tree’s bark, sap, roots, leaves, seeds, and flowers are used in traditional medicine.

Drumstick Leaves tend to spoil very fast. If you get fresh leaves its good. Otherwise you can dry roast them and store it.
Furthermore, it is a healthy chutney made from fresh drumstick leaves, grated coconut and some of the spices. It can be served as aside dish along with dosa, idli, or along with white rice.
I got to know about the Drumstick leaves chutney from mom, I really wanted to taste it. When we had visited Grandma’s house I saw a big tree of Moringa there. So thought of giving a try. Then I had bought the fresh leaves from the tree and prepared the chutney. When you get the fresh leaves make sure you consume it in any form either the fresh leaves or you can dry the leaves and store them.
You can eat moringa leaves in all sorts of ways: Moringa leaves can be eaten in salads, added to rice or pasta or any other dish. The list is endless. Juice the Moringa leaves, fry or steam the leaves in any meal, bake Moringa in goodies, add to shakes. Moringa leaf powder can be used as a tea, added to beverages, sprinkled on food or taken in capsules. It can be used in soups or any other dish.

Moringa Leaves Chutney | Drumstick Leaves Chutney
Ingredients
- 1 cup Moringa Leaves
- 1 tsp Oil
- 1/2 tsp Urad dal
- 1/4 tsp Cumin
- 3 Green Chillies
- 1 cup Grated Coconut
- Salt to taste
- 1/2 tsp Dry Mango Powder
- 3/4 cup Water
Instructions
- Separate the leaves of Moringa. Wash them well and tap dry with the kitchen towel.
- In a Pan, take 1 tsp of Oil.
- Once the oil is heated, 1/2 tsp of Urad dal.
- Then add 1/4 tsp Cumin.
- Next add 3 green chillies, you can adjust the spice based on your taste.
- It will starts to splutter.
- Then add 1 cup of cleaned and de-stemmed Moringa Leaves (Drumstick Leaves).
- Roast it for 2 minutes, or until the raw aroma disappears.
- Once it is roasted well, add 1 cup of grated coconut.
- Then add salt to taste.
- Again roast for 1 minute.
- Then Switch off the flame. Also add 1/2 tsp dry mango powder.
- Allow it to cool for sometime.
- Transfer to the mixi jar.
- Add 3/4 cup of water.
- Blend it to a smooth paste.
- Transfer to the serving bowl.
- Moringa Chutney is ready to serve.

HOW TO MAKE MORINGA CHUTNEY | DRUMSTICK LEAVES CHUTNEY WITH STEP BY STEP PHOTOS:
