Benefits of Banana plant is not just limited to the fruit. Banana Stem and Banana flower also contains lot of nutrients, but most of us are not aware. Moreover, stem being able to prevent many ailments, it clearly qualifies as a ‘SUPERFOOD’.
Firstly, using the Banana Stem in your diet is good home remedy for kidney stones. Secondly, juice of the banana stem can be had first thing in the morning for weight loss. It helps in detoxification, so it is good to include banana stem in our diet at least once in 15 days or once in a month.

Banana stem salad is a quick recipe if you are ready with the chopped banana stem. Remove the outer layer of the banana stem / plantain stem until you can remove it from hands. Then cut it into rounds removing the thread like fiber with your index finger. After that chop into small pieces and keep in diluted buttermilk or diluted curd, otherwise it gets dark colour.
Bale Dindina Kosambari |Vazhaithandu Kosumalli is a nutritionally rich salad prepared from the chopped banana stem, soaked moong dal, and some freshly chopped vegetables. I have not used any spice here, you can also consider adding pepper powder or green chillies.
Furthermore, Banana Stem/ plantain stems are also used for preparing stir fry/poriyal, raita/pachadi, curry, soup, juice, cutlet and many more.

Banana Stem Salad | Vazhaithandu Salad
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup Banana Stem/ Plantain stem chopped
- 1/4 cup Curd / Buttermilk for soaking the chopped banana stem until use
- 3/4 cup Water to dilute buttermilk/curd
- 1/2 cup Cucumber chopped
- 1/2 cup Carrot grated
- 1/4 cup Onion chopped
- 1/4 cup Pomegranate kernels
- 1/4 cup Moong dal soaked for 30 minutes
- 1/2 tsp Ginger grated
- 5-6 drops Lemon juice
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Remove the outer layer of the banana stem / plantain stem until you can remove it from hands. Then cut it into rounds removing the thread like fiber with your index finger. Then chop into small pieces.
- Soak in a diluted curd or buttermilk until use as soon as you finish chopping. otherwise it starts becoming dark colour.
- Once the chopping of other vegetables are also ready then drain the water.
- In a mixing bowl take 3/4 cup of chopped banana stem.
- Add 1/2 cup of chopped cucumber.
- Also add 1/2 cup of grated carrot.
- Then add 1/4 cup of chopped onion.
- Next add 1/4 cup of pomegranate kernels.
- Add 1/4 cup of moong dal (soaked in water for 30 minutes).
- Then add 1/2 tsp of grated ginger.
- And squeeze some lemon juice.
- Add salt to taste.
- Mix well & garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
- Banana stem Salad is ready to serve.

- Firstly, choose the tender banana stem for preparing the salad.
- In this recipe I have not used any spice. You can consider adding chillies or pepper powder.
