Baby walker-is it really necessary??

June 27, 2017 Pallavi Bhat Leave a Comment

When your baby start to crawl and able to stand up with some support then many people think of buying baby walker. So that baby can be safe they feel. But of course it’s not true. Though baby walker / infant walkers are popular product, yet AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) wants it to be banned.

Lot of people use baby walker

It’s true that many parents use walker for their baby. A study shows that more than 50% of the parents buy walkers.

Walkers are made out of metal framing with a fabric-covered chair.  Suspend babies from four months to one and half year. Some walkers do have musical activity centers to entertain babies while they scoot around the room. Some mothers believed it would help teach toddlers to walk, and some got it as a gift so they want to use… 🙂

You may feel that if your baby were occupied in her walker, she could be left without watching for short periods. In reality, extra care is needed when your baby is in a walker. Even with supervision, accidents in baby walkers can easily occur. A baby in a baby walker can travel one meter per second, so an accident can happen before you are able to stop it. Baby walkers are dangerous because they give babies extra speed, extra height, and access to many hazards. They are also unstable on uneven surfaces. In Canada, the sale of baby walkers are banned. Your baby would be safer if leave on a hazard free room.

Walkers won’t help your baby learn to walk. Using walkers too much may even delay her development slightly. Your baby needs to learn to roll, crawl, sit and to play on the floor, in order to reach her developmental milestones.

Baby will spend very minimum time on the walker, when the baby actually starts walking then baby doesn’t need a walker.

It’s best not to buy a walker, many experts disagree the use of baby walkers, because of the number of accidents they cause.

Considering the safety concerns, baby walker is one product you may want to avoid.

Consider these factors before buying:
  1. Baby has no control over the speed,
  2. Walkers wont help baby to learn to walk,
  3. Baby can easily get hold of the things which might be hazardous,
  4. Baby can reach to new heights which she never reached before,
  5. Using a walker may delay baby’s developmental activities.

If you want to buy baby walker anyway then think twice before you go for it. Indeed, the decision is personal.

Here are the links to buy for those who want to buy online.

Happy parenting…! 🙂
