Planning Your Trip: From Bangalore to Shivanasamudra

  • Distance: ~135 km
  • Travel Time: Around 3 hours by car depends on the traffic.
  • Best Time to Visit: Monsoon and post-monsoon (July–October) for peak waterfall flow.
  • Ideal Itinerary: Leave Bangalore early morning, visit Gaganachukki view point, Collapsed old bridge & Sri Ranganathaswamy temple on the way to Bharachukki, then Bharachukki viewpoint. Have lunch at Bhagyashree Brahmin Mess(open on weekends). Return to bangalore by evening.

Here’s a detailed guide to the 4 must-visit places in Shivanasamudra.

1. Gaganchukki Waterfalls Viewpoint

Gaganachukki is the crown jewel of Shivanasamudra’s twin waterfalls. The Cauvery River splits into two branches, with Gaganachukki showcasing a magnificent horseshoe-shaped cascade plunging dramatically into the gorge below.

A trip to Shivanasamudra is incomplete without experiencing the breathtaking Gaganachukki Waterfalls, one half of the famous twin cascades of the Cauvery River. Just this spot is a perfect monsoon weekend escape.

Gaganachukki is not just about the view — the roar of the water itself is an experience that stays with you.

2. Collapsed Old Bridge – Shivanasamudra

The Old Bridge of Shivanasamudra – A silent witness to history. Though no longer functional, the collapsed old bridge of Shivanasamudra is a reminder of the region’s past. Built decades ago, it once connected vital trade routes and offered stunning views of the Cauvery. Time, floods, and the relentless flow of the river led to its eventual collapse.

Today, the ruins of the bridge are a favorite spot for photographers and history enthusiasts, adding a touch of mystery to the verdant landscape. It’s also a place to pause and reflect on the ever-changing relationship between man-made structures and nature’s forces.

3. Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple Shivanasamudra

Shivanasamudra isn’t just about waterfalls; it’s also home to the revered Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, known as Madhya Ranga. This ancient shrine is one of the Pancharanga Kshetras, a group of five sacred temples dedicated to Lord Ranganatha, a reclining form of Vishnu.

The temple dates back to the 9th century and was patronized by the Ganga, Hoysala, and Vijayanagara dynasties.
For Vaishnavites, Madhya Ranga holds a special spiritual place, positioned between Adi Ranga (Srirangapatna) and Antya Ranga (Srirangam in Tamil Nadu).

4. Bharachukki Waterfalls Viewpoint

Tucked away in the river island town of Shivanasamudra, the Barachukki Waterfalls viewpoint is one of Karnataka’s most captivating spots for nature lovers and weekend travelers. This panoramic viewpoint offers a front-row seat to the cascading might of the Cauvery River, as it plunges over multiple tiers of rugged cliffs to form the iconic Bharachukki waterfalls.

Although Bharachukki viewpoint is more commercialized, you need to buy tickets to park the vehicle as well as to enter inside the gate to viewpoint.
There are many shops for Icecreams, chats etc

Travel Tips

  • Safety First: Avoid swimming near the waterfalls; currents are deceptively strong.
  • Food & Fuel: Carry snacks and water; Mandya has good pit stops for meals.
  • Footwear: Wear comfortable shoes suitable for wet and slippery surfaces.
  • Photography: Keep camera gear protected from mist and rain.
